We developed a holistic property ecosystem that celebrates the creative identity of the neighborhood, while also establishing a community hub that elevates both RiNo and Denver as a whole. This effort consisted of two phases: developing the hotel's brand identity and interior concept, as well as establishing the design direction for a mixed-use lobby and rooftop bar.
Catbird features new construction around an original home from the late 1800s, centering a sense of history at the heart of a contemporary transformation. By leveraging this juxtaposition of old and new architecture—blending the notion of a hotel with the nuances of home—we deepened the sense of transition and a concept of duality began to take shape.
The brand identity reinforces the idea of joined forces through strong, contrasting colors and a pair of unmistakably distinct typestyles, evoking both a sense of familiarity and the unexpected. The icon, named “Klee” after the prolific and highly individual modernist painter Paul Klee, captures the playful spirit of the hotel's name in the form of an artist's doodle, paying homage to its artistic inspiration.
It's more than just a lobby; it's RiNo's living room. We sought to create a space that fosters a deeper sense of belonging among guests and the community alike—a place that effortlessly welcomes those seeking a spot to gather, dine, work, and collaborate.
Expansive and open, yet full of nooks that offer seclusion and privacy, the space allows different energies to flow and blend naturally. The shelves are full of books and objects that feel inviting and attractive, like the well-lived-in home of a friend who has a passion for traveling and collecting. A rich material palette emphasizes natural variances, textures, and inherent patterns, while also welcoming moments of bold color.
If Catbird’s ground floor is your dream home, then its rooftop is your daydream. Inspired by Brutalist city parks and modern sculpture gardens, we created something far from ordinary just below the heavenly Denver sky. In contrast with the softer character of the lobby, the rooftop bar was designed with a sculptural approach, adorned with artistic furniture and lighting, and finished with offbeat details. Undulating curves inform the space, creating booths and seating clusters within the uncommon triangular footprint of the building.
The artistic, modern, and distinct perspective of Catbird can be felt throughout the property through bold art curation, furniture and materials, intelligent room design, and thoughtful brand touchpoints.
